Did you know?
Mulberry belonging to the fig family is found in Asia and North America. Popular in Greece, mulberry is the fruit of the goddess of wisdom, Athena. The history of the mulberry was heavily linked to the silk industry. The fruits were used to fatten silkworms in the Orient region which contributed to better production of silk. The sap from these bushes was used to treat ringworm.
The Cherokee made herbal tea with them to help with urination and weak bladders. This grape-like fruit also mentioned in the rhyme “Here we go round the mulberry bush” had a much darker meaning. Apparently, this nursery rhyme refers to an English Yorkshire prison. The song commemorates the required daily walks the women would take around the prison yard.
