Did you know?
Nettles, a common weed that causes an annoying itchy sting. We pull them out of our flower beds and kill them with weed killer but these prickly green leaves have been used in history and today for some productive uses. Romans used this herb’s sting as a counterirritant, meaning the chemicals in a nettle can decrease an existing pain.
Roman soldiers allegedly used this effect to their advantage, not accustomed to the colder British weather so they would rub their arms and legs with nettle leaves, the stinging would create a warming sensation, strange, but suppose when you are desperate for some warmth.
They were also commonly used to create cloth in the 18th century in Scotland!
