Did you know?
Liquorice is a type of flowering plant which can grow up to 5 feet tall. The delicate flowers come in shades of blue and purple looking somewhat like a cross between a thistle and a lavender spear. It is native to southern Europe and Asia and has connections with Egyptian royalty. When Pharoah Tutankhamun’s tomb was uncovered, Archaeologists found liquorice root right next to his valuable treasures to be taken to the afterlife. Other leaders such as Alexander the Great and Julius Caesar were advocates of the stuff, endorsing its health benefits to their people. The word liquorice in Greek means “sweet root” which is very fitting as the flavour of the root comes from the glycyrrhizin inside liquorice and this compound is 50 times sweeter than sugar. That’s a whole lot of sweetness without the guilt.
