Did you know?
Matcha tea is very on-trend in modern times. Found on most menus ranging from tea, latte and smoothies. It can be used in an array of desserts including ice cream and even pancakes. The matcha frenzy is everywhere, and with its long list of health benefits and living in a day and age when health is number one, it’s the green tea in every Gen-Z’s cup. This popular drink dates back in history to the Tang Dynasty in China. During this time, the Tang Dynasty steamed tea leaves to create bricks, making tea harvests easier to transport and trade.
These tea bricks were prepared by roasting and pulverizing the leaves and then mixing the resulting tea powder with water and salt. Chinese Zen monks discovered the joys of Matcha.
They would prepare their tea by breaking off a chunk, mashing it with a mortar and pestle until they got a fine powder, and then whisking the tea powder and hot water together in a wide, shallow bowl. Preparation and drinking of this tea played a significant part in the lives of lots of early Zen Buddhists, and, eventually, intricate rituals were formed around this vibrant green tea. The Japanese Tea Ceremony is called “Chado” or “Sado.” Translated, this means “The Way of Tea.” The four basic principles of the Japanese Tea Ceremony are Harmony, Respect, Purity and tranquility. Although nowadays a tea ceremony isn’t something practiced each time, we sit down for a cup of Matcha but the feelings created when drinking tea really are, tranquil and harmonious.
