Did you know?

Blackcurrants are a non-native species and are found in many parts of the world. In the UK blackcurrants are in many woodlands growing wild amongst other tasty berries. Readily available in the UK, blackcurrant cultivation was banned in the US and you couldn’t buy these sweet, tart berries in any of the shops.

This is because in 1911 these berries became illegal to grow as they produced a fungus which would infect pine trees and became a danger to the pine forests.

As these restrictions went on for a long period, blackcurrants became unpopular, nowadays only 0.1% of Americans have even eaten a blackcurrant. Each year in Britain we harvest around 14 billion blackcurrants. A lot of the time they are made into foods we eat such as jams, pies and the number one blackcurrant product we Brits love, Ribena!
